Two Party Impasse

The two party system in America prevents the populace from getting any action on their real needs. The system serves the ruling class, not the electorate. Big donors expect access for their funds.

This topic was written in the summer of 2018 when Congress, special prosecutor, Trump, and the media are wasting much time and resources on the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

This diversion allows the government to avoid more important issues.

Helen Keller wrote in 1911: "Our democracy is but a name. We vote? What does that mean? It means that we choose between two bodies of real, though not avowed, autocrats. We choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee...."
The two parties can/will argue about an issue so that the populace cannot get any action on real important issues like universal health care, which many other countries have, or stopping the $1 trillion spent annually on our global empire, or no tax cuts for the rich funded by the public debt, or ceasing our police state where unarmed citizens are murdered with impunity while everyone is watched by Big Brother. I could mention other issues currently in the Dem / Rep split, which serves as an effective pacifier. If I vent further then this is too long.

Hoard Zinn has been quoted:

Democracy depends on citizens being informed, and since our media, especially television (which is the most important source of news for most Americans) reports mostly what the people in power do, and repeats what the people in power say, the public is badly informed, and it means we cannot really say we have a functioning democracy.

When the Democrats are attacked for [inciting class warfare] they shrink back. They don't say what obviously should be said, "Yes, there is class warfare. There has always been class warfare in this country." The reason the Democrats shrink back is because the Democrats and the Republicans are on the same side of the class war. They have slightly different takes. The Democrats are part of the upper class that is more willing to make concessions to the lower class in order to maintain their power.

Can this impasse be fixed? One attempt at a solution for a similar problem was made in 1776, but that solution is crumbling now and so is on the brink of failure or collapse. The following recalls the start of that attempt:


From the declaration of independence:

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.


In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Our current two-party system is not a working democracy.
The American democracy is controlled and run by the two political parties and the ruling class so any change or reform must be done by them; the alternative to many incremental changes in the government executed by those who will be affected, is just trying again in totality.
