Want
Want implies a person is missing something that is not critical but that person wants to get it. Need implies a person is missing something that is critical. A person would need food and water, as a matter of survival, but a person could want to get a new pair of shoes before the current shoes wear out. A want indicates a dissatisfaction with life but fulfilling this want or wish could satisfy that discomfort. There is a commonly heard statement: It's not having what you want It's wanting what you've got. The song by Sheryl Crow, Soak Up The Sun, even has that statement in its lyrics.
"not having what you want" implies dissatisfaction, when having a want. "wanting what you've got" implies satisfaction because you already "got" it. I find it ironic the phrase "pursuit of happiness" which states a want was used by America's Founding Fathers. If one is active in this pursuit then one is not happy from the very start. However everyone should be free to pursue those wishes.
